Kevin McNulty
Kevin James McNulty was born March 29, 1964. He is also known as "Kev," "Tai," or "Nuts." He is the only child of parents James McNulty and Pauline McNulty nee Gillotti, but was rasied with his half-sister from his mother's first marriage. He also has two half-sisters and a half-brother from his father's first marriage, though he did not know any of them until he was nearly an adult, and is not at all close with them.
Childhood
Kevin was born in Mineola, NY on Easter Sunday - a fact many who know him find particularly ironic. He moved to Westminster, CA in 1966 with his parents and sister. After moving to Chula Vista, CA for less than two years, the McNulty's settled in Anaheim, CA in 1974 where Kevin remained through college graduation. His parents and sister still live close to one another in Anaheim.
He started school at Thomas Paine Elementary in Westminster, attended Fred H. Rohr in Chula Vista, and Roosevelt and Sunkist Elementary Schools in Anaheim. He went to South Junior High and graduated from Katella High School in 1982. He went to Cal State Fullerton on an academic scholarship, and graduated with honors in 1986 with a BA in psychology.
Occupations
Kevin has worked at least 30 jobs since he started working at the SoCal fast food chain Del Taco when he was 14 years old. His most challenging and rewarding position, however, was being a stay-at-home-dad for seven years, caring for Sean and Erin. Currently, he works for Ceridian Benefit Services in St. Petersburg, FL.
Military Career
Kevin applied for the ROTC program at Cal State Fullerton. He wanted to fly helicopters for the U.S. Army. During his flight physical, doctors discovered he had an "asymptomatic" hernia and he was rejected from the program until the hernia could be repaired. The hernia was repaired a short while later, but Kevin's career focus had shifted since then towards psychology.
After graduation, Kevin thought about what to do next. If he wanted to work in psychology or medicine, grad school would be required, but he was burnt out on school, he could not afford to put himself through it alone. He enlisted in the U.S. Army reserve in order to receive tuition support on the Montgomery GI Bill, and to receive further medical training as a Behavioral Science Specialist (in 1986, the MOS was 91-G).
Kevin enlisted in October of 1986 and was assigned to the 349th General Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. He left for boot camp at Fort Bliss, TX in March of 1987. He was assigned to Alpha Company, 3rd Training BN, 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade which supervised basic training at Fort Bliss.
While at Fort Bliss, he caught chicken pox and was isolated at William Beaumont Army Medical Center where he subsequently developed a severe infection in his lower left leg. Kevin turned 23 in a hospital bed with four IVs in his arms and battling to save his leg from amputation.
Though most of the use of the leg was recovered, pain and limited mobility in the ankle meant an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons in March of 1988. Though the injury to his leg leaves him with pain to this day, he wouldn't have traded the experience for anything, as he would have never met his wife, Debbie, if he hadn't been sent home when he was.
