REDdimension Wiki:About
REDdimension Wiki was created on August 28, 2007 by Jon Reddick.
From October 2007 email correspondence between Jon and his long lost, but recently found cousin, Michelle:
Something about the onset of old age has made me enthusiastic about documenting my own history. I think a lot of it is having lost my dad so early. There are so many things about him that I don't know, because he died before I was old enough and wise enough to know what questions to ask.
In this way, I feel like I'm documenting both myself and everything about my family history so I won't be forgotten, and my daughter will never lack for knowledge about her own father like I do for mine. -Jon
It is not a replacement for, but an addition to the data that already exists on Wikipedia. All articles on this wiki should answer the question, "What significance does x have as it/he/she relates to our family and friends?"
So an article may exist on Wikipedia, but the same article may also exist here that answers the above question. For example, you might read the very thorough article about Gatlinburg and Wikipedia, and then read the more targeted article about Gatlinburg here on REDdimension Wiki. The 'Pedia article will give you the broad strokes, but on the REDwiki article you'll learn that it's a favorite vacation spot for the Reddick family and some of their favorite places there to visit.
Contents
Things REDdimension Wiki will try to do
- Serve as a place to catalog general knowledge specific to my family & friends
- Articles will answer the question, "What does x have to do with our circle of family & friends?"
- If significance to the above question is not obvious, will have a section labeled "Significance" which spotlights the article's reason for inclusion on the Wiki
Things REDdimension Wiki will not try to do
- Attempt in any way to duplicate information that already exists on Wikipedia
Why?
What's it for? It's becoming readily evident by those already participating that the Wiki is not only a great place to archive our collective history, but in many ways a way to relive it. Who knew it would be this much fun?
How will we use it? So far we've started collecting biographies of family, friends, and friends & family of friends, not to mention an admirable beginning to the complete archival of the history of the USS Khai Tam. Who knows what other great things are to come.
Will it be useful? If it stopped right now, it has already proven itself valuable. But I am getting the great impression that it will continue to grow as more and more of our circle discover the joy of Wiki-ing.
The neat part is that it's collaborative, so you can write, I can write, our children can write when they're ready -- and each of us can build upon those that write before us. It's actually quite a cathartic experience in some ways.
Essentially, it's a repository of knowledge -- a collection of things we've learned and known specific to us that is both searchable and accessible from anywhere.
