Origin

In the Star Trek:The Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect", the Enterprise crew goes through a repeating series of events throughout the episode. Shortly after the episode aired, some Khai Tam crewmember made a reference to having done some action before. Jon Reddick referred to this being like a Temporal Causality Loop, to which Kevin McNulty replied "You mean where things keep happening over and over again?" They repeated the sequence a couple of times, until everyone in the meeting was laughing.

Usage

Typically, someone would make a reference to having done or seen something before, or something being repetitive in some way. Almost immediately, someone, usually Kevin McNulty, would come back with "It's like a Temporal Causality Loop?" Someone else, often Jon Reddick, Colin Toenjes, or Jon Carney, would come back with the response "You mean where things keep happening over and over again?" This would often repeat until someone would get annoyed enough to threaten or enact mild physical violence on one or all of the participating parties.
