Sleep Room

Whenever the crew of the USS Khai Tam attended an event (usually a Star Trek convention) in sufficient numbers to warrant sharing two or more hotel rooms, one room was typically designated as the Party Room while the other(s) were designated as the Sleep Room(s). While the Sleep Rooms had a lights-out curfew set by general agreement, it was understood that the Party Room had none.

Shared hotel rooms generally had two full-size beds, which made for many interesting sleep arrangements. Typically, it was expected that four people would share the two beds, while up to four others would sleep on the floor of the room. Bed spaces were given first to those who needed them for medical reasons, and the remainder given by lottery. However, preference to stay in the Sleep Room as opposed to the Party Room sometimes made floor space in the Sleep Room even more crowded, and it was not unusual to have more than eight in the Sleep Room by two or three in the morning.

Sleeping in the Sleep Room was sometimes difficult not only because of the crowded conditions, but also due to the legendary snoring of some of the ship's members - most notably Raye "Blackjack" Crews, James "Cannon" Lewis, and then ship's captain Jon Reddick. Collectively they were referred to as the Klingon Opera. Sleep was sometimes also made difficult due to the fact that, whenever possible, the Party and Sleep Rooms were adjoining rooms with a door between them. While this made for a convenient arrangement during the day, the noise traveling from one room to the other sometimes disturbed the occupants of the Sleep Room.

If there was only one room at a ship's event, the majority of the occupants generally established the character of the room, sometimes to the chagrin of the minority.
