Opper-J

Opper-J was the Khai Tam nickname for John Opper. Members of the club who were particularly active or noteworthy generally were given (or adopted) nicknames.

Origin

At the time John joined the Khai Tam, there were already at least four members named John, most notably Captain Jon Reddick. Looking to avoid confusion between the similar names, crew members had long since taken to awarding nicknames to any other member named John. The nickname Opper-J was easily derived simply from reading a last name, first initial list of ship members.

Coincidentally, John was already somewhat accustomed to the name at the outset because his email address used the same structure: opperj.
