419 Pete's Lane

Pete's Lane was the home of Ken, Sharon and Jon Reddick and later Sharon's mother, Ruby Price from 1977-1999 in Loughman, Florida.

Ken and Sharon purchased the two and one half acre lot on what was then a rough, shell-rock road in July of 1977 for $7,500 and moved their single-wide mobile home from Lakewood Campground onto the property with the help of new neighbor, Pete Loeber.

The intention was to one day build a home and replace the trailer, however, rather than ever build a new, stand-alone home, the frame of the mobile home was reinforced and an addition was constructed on the front which nearly tripled the square footage.

So satisfied with the results of the add-on, two subsequent construction projects yielded even more space and square footage.

No-Name Road

In 1977, the lot on Pete's Lane was not on Pete's Lane. The Reddicks had purchased property on what was legally listed as "No Name Road" in Loughman, Florida. At one point it even bore the ironic county street sign with that name where it intersected with CR-547. Years after moving there, the residents of No Name Road were in search of a more proper name for their growing neighborhood's road.

Several suggestions were tossed about, including one which was an anagram of the first letter of the first name of all children currently living on the road, but later is was agreed to name it in memory of the first resident, Pete Loeber; the same Pete Loeber who had helped the Reddicks move and level their trailer when they first moved onto No Name Road.

1988 Having long since outgrown their living space, Ken & Sharon determined that adding onto the existing home would yield far more space at far less expense, so a construction project was undertaken to add an additional 20'x60' to the front of the trailer. 1,920
1990 Ruby Price had sold her home on Miami Avenue in Davenport to move to the home on Pete's Lane with Ken, Sharon & Jon. With some of the proceeds of that sale, a second construction project got underway. It included an apartment for Ruby with one bedroom, one bath and a living room, plus a large 14'x30' family room & den with fireplace. The entire addition was 14'x60'. 2,760
1991 Longtime family friend and close personal friend of Ruby, Winona "Winnie" Vaughn, had retired and expressed an interest to be close to Ruby and the Reddicks. Largely at her expense, one more addition to the house was made. This the smallest of the three, was a simple 16'x16' bedroom and bath added to the back of Ruby's apartment, then making the entire back apartment 670 sq.ft., 2BR/2BA plus living room. 3,016

Loss of Pete's Lane

After the death of Ken in July 1991, and with Jon away at college, Sharon was left with mounting debt and no family to help her with such a large home. She subdivided the house into five apartments and let rooms to tenants who would share the common dining room and living room spaces.

After struggling single-handedly for nearly ten years to keep the house afloat financially, the string of delinquent tenants and unsound financial advice from attorneys finally took their toll. Sharon was forced to move from the home in 1999, and it was lost to the financing bank in August 2000.

Despite the tragic loss of the home after twenty-three years, it will forever be fondly remembered as the primary and most beloved home of Ken and Sharon, and their son, Jon.
