The motto is based on the famous quote, "A ship in a harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for." (need the rest of the origin story)
Trivia
- The variant which became the ship's official motto was the campaign slogan of the Reddick/Copetti command team when they ran for the CO/XO positions in 1991.
- Though discussion of changing this ship's motto occasionally broke out throughout the history of the club, the matter was only put to a vote once during the tenure of the Long command team. Literally dozens of suggestions were made, some serious and some amusing (many of which were or became Informal Ship's Motto), but in the end, the old motto was affirmed as ship's choice. It has remained uncontested ever since.
