OJ was the Khai Tam nickname for John Carney. Members of the club who were particularly active or noteworthy generally were given (or adopted) nicknames.

Origin

At the time John joined the Khai Tam, the ship's Captain was Jon Reddick. Looking to avoid confusion between the two similar names, Kevin McNulty suggested that the club refer to John Carney as "OJ" for "Other John." Amused, the members agreed and the nickname stuck.

In the months and years that followed, six more Johns would join the club (see Eight of Eight). This prompted the Informal Ship's Motto, "The USS Khai Tam, where you may not be able to find a bathroom, but you can always find a John."

Trivia

A good friend of Clan McNulty, OJ was present as labor coach for the birth of Erin McNulty as Kevin McNulty helped to deliver the baby. After delivering Erin, mother Debbie McNulty grabbed a handful of OJ's t-shirt, pulled him down toward the bed, looked him straight in the eye, and said, "Now ask me if I want my tubes tied!"
