Help talk:Formatting Guidelines
Speaking of linking, I'd love to hear your opinion of "When to Hyperlink" as I tend to be a big fan of links. I get lost on Wikipedia for hours clicking links. :) Since so much of the outside world is already on the web somewhere, a lot of things we type about in this Wiki could rate hyperlinks. What's your view on adding them in? The more the merrier, or do you not like them because the encourage people to perhaps leave the Wiki? --Tai
Oh, I think prolific linking is fine, provided the link out actually has something meaningful to add to the topic. For instance, if we're talking about a favorite movie, a link to the wikipedia or imdb entry is virtually essential, but I'd discourage linking because it seemed like a fun thing to do. --Jon 20:11, 24 September 2007 (CDT)
Italics
Your mention of italics for quotes confuses me. The writing convention a la AP Stylebook is that a quotation of a sentence or two gets quotation marks, a longer quotation gets a separate paragraph, indented on both margins, in italics. The use of quotation marks with italics is therefore contradictory. Thoughts?
Also, I was totally wrong about movie titles versus TV titles and books versus magazines. I copied the italics rules from "ehow.com" and pasted thm into this article. --Tai
If you can devise a template that will indent that type of quote, I'm all for it. I suppose it's worth mentioning that this isn't the Associated Press either... "My way" vs. "AP way" isn't my concern, as long as I have a set guideline, so when I edit someone else's work it's not arbitrary, but in order to conform to a style. --Jon 19:50, 28 September 2007 (CDT)
Okay. Didn't mean to criticize. I was just sayin'. --Tai
Sorry. Never wiki drunk. :) Had just gotten back from two pitchers of margaritas and was agitated. :) I actually like the blocked quotes, but I don't know how easy they'll be to do. What's contradictory? --Jon 21:02, 28 September 2007 (CDT)
The contradcition was the suggested use of quotation marks and italics when the convention is quotation marks or italics. I would say if you couldn't use indentations, just stick with quotation marks for quotes. My opinion only. It is of course your Wiki. ;-) --Tai
