SAM

SAM was the Khai Tam nickname for Mary Whitaker. Members of the club who were particularly active or noteworthy generally were given (or adopted) nicknames.

Origin

Long-time member Mary joined the Khai Tam at a time when two other members were already named Mary. Looking to avoid confusion between the two similar names, and having just awarded Mary Givens the nickname OM for similar reasons, the club started referring to Mary as "SAM" for "Still Another Mary." Rather than pronouncing the separate letters as in OJ, pronounced "oh-Jay", SAM is pronounced "sam."
