The Sarasota Medieval Fair is an annual medieval-themed event started in 2005 in Sarasota, FL. In 2006, the fair's location changed to Hunsader's Farm in Bradenton, FL, but the name remained. The 2006 Sarasota Medieval Fair featured 17 international and nationally renowned entertainment groups, 255 entertainers, 100+ themed vendors and food vendors, exotic animal encounters such as Elephants Rides and Tiger Exhibits, a free Children's Activity Center, exciting themed rides/games, period dancing and music, six large stages, a Celebrity Tent, three food courts, and much more. The 2007 fair was somewhat smaller.
The fair is held in November each year, with a different historical setting (referred to as the "scenario") each time. Cast members and volunteers dress in the period of the scenario and perpetuate a corresponding storyline from opening gate to closing gate throughout the day. Key to the story are the two human combat chess matches which the cast performs, each of which typically "degenerates" into a melee by the end of the game.
Significance
REDdimension Wiki Circle members Kevin, Debbie, Sean and Erin McNulty have been members of the SMF cast since 2006. They dressed as pirates for the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at their local theater, and there they encountered a group from the fair. They signed up for auditions and the rest is history.
2006
The first year the McNulty's participated in the SMF, the scenario was "The Battle of Lincoln" which occurred in 1141 when Stephen and Matilda wrestled for the throne of England. The McNulty's were cast as follows:
- Kevin - Sir Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk and infamous side-switcher
- Debbie - Bernadette, the French baker with the best buns in the village
- Sean - John Piper, the wandering minstrel
- Erin - Selena, the little orphan girl
This year, Kevin fought on the chessboard where he was soundly trounced in the first melee.
2007
The second year the McNulty's participated, the scenario was "The Battle of Stirling" which occurred in 1297 when King Edward I attempted to put down the Scottish rebellion lead by William Wallace (a battle somewhat inaccurately memorialized in the film Braveheart). The McNulty's were cast as follows:
- Kevin - Robert du Brus VI, Earl of Annondale and father of the famous "Robert the Brus"
- Debbie - Catie Colville, the town weaver
- Sean - William "the Whistler", one-half of aspiring bard sister/brother act
- Erin - Jamisina, other-half of aspiring bard sister/brother act
This year, Debbie, Sean and Erin all fought on the chessboard in different parts of the melee.
