OM was the Khai Tam nickname for Mary Givens. Members of the club who were particularly active or noteworthy generally were given (or adopted) nicknames.
Origin
Right around the time Mary joined the Khai Tam, the ship's Department Chief-Operations was Mary "Radar" Kleinfeldt. Looking to avoid confusion between the two similar names, and having just awarded John Carney the nickname OJ for similar reasons, the club started referring to Mary as "OM" for "Other Mary." Rather than pronouncing the separate letters as in OJ, pronounced "oh-Jay", OM is pronounced "ohm."
