Sally was a was a family pet from 2004 through 2011, adopted by the Reddicks while living in Tallahassee, FL.

Life
When Dana was five years old, her parents took her to a haunted trail for Halloween, because she liked them. However, she became so frightened at this particular one that she began having trouble sleeping at night, waking with night terrors and sleepwalking. After a couple of months of this, her parents Ro & Jon thought that if she had a dog that could jump on her bed and sleep with her, it would help allay some of her fears.

Dana thought it was a good idea, so the family went for a visit to the Tallahassee animal shelter to see about adopting. A Springer Spaniel had a litter of puppies just weeks old, and Dana was let into the pen with them to select one. There were about 8 beautiful, fluffy butterscotch-colored puppies, all jumping & yipping for her attention, playfully chewing on her shoes and climbing up her legs, but she instead waded through their excitement to a tiny, shivering lump of fur curled up in a stainless steel feeding bowl. This puppy looked nothing like the others, with black and tan mangy fur, a white stripe down her nose, and a hairless tail.

She picked up this tiny, sickly puppy and cradled it in her arms, and looked to her parents indicating this was the one she wanted. We glanced at the animal shelter vet who shook her head and whispered that this one probably wasn't going to live. It was the runt -- underweight, and full of worms, with no hair on its tail, looking as sickly and frail as can be. Jon & Ro tried to encourage Dana to reconsider and look at the other puppies that really wanted to go home with her. But she wouldn't be convinced. Instead she held the tiny dog tighter and said, "But this one needs me."

Having committed to adopt the puppy if and when it could be nursed to health, the animal shelter fostered the puppy out to one of its helpers, where she began a two-week course of shots, medicine, vitamins, several wormings, and manual feedings. Miraculously, the small pup came around to at least an acceptable level of health to be adopted, and the Reddicks took her home.

Dana named her Sally, after the patchwork character from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas animated film.

Within the first week at the Reddick home, Sally gained 5 pounds, and grew quickly thereafter. She was smart and playful, and it was hard to believe this was the same puppy from the shelter. However, it wasn't long before there were some noticeable problems. The vet noted that Sally's skull was not forming correctly -- that as she grew, it wasn't fusing in the right places. This eventually became a ridge on her head. Also, she was noted to run with a "bunny hop" -- the classic indicator of hip dysplasia, common in larger dogs. None of this seemed to deter Sally from being happy, but it did keep her from being able to jump, so she was never able to get onto Dana's bed on her own. She also was never able to sit up, as most dogs do, without falling over. However, she learned many other tricks very easily -- some within 5 minutes.

Sally's tricks included:
* Sneezing on cue
* Shaking hands/giving high 5
* Waving
* Growling on cue
* Rolling over (until her arthritis made it to difficult)
* Doing a figure 8 through the legs
* Lie down and crawl
* Barking on cue

Barking was not something Sally did much. She was a very quiet dog, so teaching her to bark on cue was difficult. In fact, it was the last trick she learned only several months before her death.

Fond Memories
* The Reddicks thought Sally was part Basenji, because they had had her more than three months before they ever heard her bark.
* Because Sally was not a barker, she had to figure a way to let her owners know she needed to go out. She developed the technique of standing up and shaking her head to make her dog tags jingle on her collar as her signal she needed to go out.
* After a lifetime of chasing squirrels and birds, Sally, much to her own surprise, actually caught a baby bird just a couple of weeks before her death. The bird lost a few feathers, but was otherwise okay. Sally was then jokingly dubbed "The Bird Killer."
* Because her owner Ro Reddick worked from home on the computer, the morning ritual was to feed Sally and then say "It's time to go to work, Sally." With that, Sally would lumber down the hallway to the computer room where she "worked" at sleeping all day, and guarding the door in hopes of keeping the cat out of the room. (It didn't work.)
* Sally loved squeaky toys, and knew the difference between her horse, monkey and squirrel toys. The Reddicks tried to convince Sally that the cat was a squeeky toy, however she was smart enough to know the difference.

Death
Some time on the evening of July 30, 2011, Sally laid down with her nose between her paws, and passed away.

She was buried in the evening of July 31, 2011 in the back yard of the Reddicks' home on Everholly Lane in Jacksonville, FL.
Since the early days of the USS Khai Tam, the ship has gotten together once a year to throw a big party. At first, it was to celebrate the season premier of whatever Star Trek show was on the air at the time, but it eventually degenerated into a simple excuse to party all weekend. From 1992 to 2002, KhaiCon dominated the Khai Tam calendar. Even with it's smaller numbers today, Khai Tam still holds its Emergency Holographic KhaiCon, or EHK, in honor of this tradition.

Origins
In September of 1991 the Reddick command staff started the tradition of having a season premiere party. The following year, the party was officially dubbed KhaiCon - a miniature convention complete with games and episode viewings and panels and a lot of fun to be had by all. Each year, KhaiCon evolved, encompassing more and more activities and growing to mammoth proportions...well, as mammoth as it could be and still be called a "miniature" convention.

While the club's parties were legendary, none compare to the KhaiCons held in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Whether it was one member having to pull another's head out of the water because they'd just gotten whacked by a canoe or whether it was the Captain pontificating from atop a chair after he'd had a bit too much Romulan Ale, KhaiCon was always a great deal of fun.

Facilities
When KhaiCon started in 1992, the Khai Tam was still a student organization at Florida State University. This allowed the club access to all kinds of FSU facilities including the "Reservation" - a 73-acre facility, with 10 active acres, located on beautiful Lake Bradford. The "Rez" encompassed several cabins and featured activities like canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, swimming, etc.

Though the facility was enjoyable, it was not handicapped friendly, and kitchen facilities were sparse. Add to the equation the fact that the Khai Tam was increasing its non-student membership to the point where it soon would no longer qualify as a student organization, and the writing was on the wall: a new home for KhaiCon would have to be found.

Fortunately, the ship found the Camp For All Seasons (CFAS), a campground on Lake Talquin owned by Girl Scouts of America. When not in use by scout troops, the camp could be rented to other groups for their non-scouting events. Its large, two-floor lodge had a full professional-style kitchen, showers, and all of the space needed for the event. There was also no shortage of cabins out away from the noise and commotion of the main lodge.

KhaiCon was notorious for being a party where plenty of alcoholic beverages would be consumed, but CFAS had a rule against any such substances on the premises. Knowing that attendees would surely ignore that rule, and not wanting to lose favor with the camp, the ship created it's own official policy to deal with the logistical hiccup, and many fantastic KhaiCons ensued.

Events
Of course, the whole thing started off as a season premiere party, so a group vieiwing of that episode was one of the original activities. The timing of KhaiCon was always tricky as we tried to reserve facilities early enough to be guaranteed a spot come the fall, not always knowing exactly when the season premire would be at the time. Khai Tam Captain Jon Reddick even came through a year or two by sneaking the episode off satellite before it even aired in Tallahassee (thanks to the TV station that employed him at the time). This viewing easily developed into one room at KhaiCon being dedicated all weekend long to genre shows and movies.

Somewhere around KhaiCon IV, Jon had the big idea to have a film contest. Due in no small measure to his being employed at a televsion studio, having a degree in TV & Film, and being almost the only person to ever enter the contest, he won quite a few Turd d'Oro awards over the years.

Each year, members would cook their most bizarre recipes and mix their most potent drinks for the Alien Food & Drink Contest. Everything from Cardassian Vole in Yamok Sauce to the dreaded Borg Lubrication Fluid were sampled by judges year after year.

Once KhaiCon moved to the big-room venue of the Camp for all Seasons, a lip sync competition was added. The members seized on the idea and it became a KhaiCon favorite for many years.

Members would also put on panels, game shows (Khai Tam Jeopardy anyone?), athletic (using the term lightly) events like frisbee golf and vollyball...basically anything anyone wanted to sponsor that anyone else would sign up for. The registration table would be strewn each year with contestant and judge sign-up sheets, and events typically filled up fast.

The apex of activities was hit at KhaiCon XI when Ro Reddick spearheaded the effort to obtain guest star Bill Blair. The self-billed "Alien Actor", Bill has spent much more than his fair share of time in the makeup chair, playing aliens on Start Trek, Babylon 5,and Sliders as well as having more traditional roles in dozens of films, shows and commercials. He was a phenomenal guest and a great sport who hung out with the whole crew all weekend. All in attendance agreed it was fantastic to have a real part of the Trek experience join the ship for the weekend of revelry. The precedent-setting guest star would, however unintentionally, assure that KhaiCon went out with a bang.

The End of an Era
By the time KhaiCon XI was done, there were a lot of crew members who were exhausted. Many of the events were planned and executed every year by the same people. There was a growing sense that someone else needed to step up and do their share. Unfortunately, no one did. Fall 2003 came and went. There would be no more KhaiCon.

Emergency Holographic KhaiCon
The memory of KhaiCon would not go quietly into that long night. It would instead be reborn in a more diminutive size that was more manageable for the ship's smaller crew. It was named after the doctor on Voyager as the Emergency Holographic KhaiCon or EHK.

One of the dedicated few who made KhaiCon happen year after year was Ro Reddick, and though she had announced that she couldn't manage the Herculean effort required by KhaiCon anymore, neither could she let another fall pass without an event. She and Jon decided, in the fall of 2004, to host the first EHK at their home.

As membership in the club curtailed, the "EHK" turned out to be just the ticket, and the EHK has taken place in the Captain's home ever since (2004, '05 at Jon Reddick's and since '06 at Richard Graham's).

Paternal Pattern Expiration Date or PPED is technically the date at which a son has lived to be older than the last memory of his father.

tocrightThis applies specifically to men for whom their father was generally a positive influence, and worthy of patterning after, but who died at an early age. The concept asserts that if a man's father was a strong, responsible role model for manhood, he becomes the measure and definition of what it is to be a man, and the son will use that guide to pattern his own social identity.

The PPED, then, is that date at which the information in that pattern has expired. Perhaps at 25 years, he might have some memory of his father when he was 25 and aspire to be that sort of man. Then again at 30, and 35, he will usually have a good recollection of his father was like at those ages. But should he live to be older than his own father, that running stream of information will eventually expire.

Example
At age 20, a son is born. The son grows to know his father, and by observing his father makes social constructs in his mind about what it is to be a man. The father dies unexpectedly at age 45, when the son is 25.

Assuming the son's memories of his father span back at least age seven, he has eighteen years of paternal patterning available. At age 30, he will remember his father at age 30, likewise at 35 and 40. But once he reaches age 46, that information has run out.

If in fact he has patterned his own social identity after his father's, any development after this point is done without a paternal reference.

Variations
*For women, a similar concept of Maternal Pattern Expiration Date may apply
*PPED may not exclusively apply to men whose fathers died at very early ages, but the concept asserts that the earlier the loss, the more significant the impact because the available pattern expires sooner in the man's life.
*PPED may not exclusively apply to the death of a father, but to other permanent loss such as abandonment or estrangement. However, the effect may be adversely affected by these alternate methods of loss as they may cast a negative light on the pattern, thus reducing its significance.

Debate
It could be argued that the loss of a father is just as significant for a daughter as it is a son. While acknowledging that each case is unique, generally women pattern their identity after their mother while men pattern after their father.

Notes
*The concept of PPED was wholly devised by Jon Reddick based on his own observations and experiences, and not based on any scientific or empirical evidence. Incidentally, his own PPED is December 9, 2019.

tocrightThe Jon Reddick Birthday Poker Invitiationals are a series of annual Texas Hold'em poker games held by and for Jon Reddick for his birthday each year.

In the spring of 2005, as Jon's birthday was drawing near, he and his wife, Ro, conceived a birthday party with all of Jon's poker buddies, but that was more than a party. It was decided that the party that year would be a grander version of their regular poker games which was to last throughout the day. As the planning evolved, it turned into two tournaments, one in the afternoon and another in the evening. Each game was to last upwards of four hours, and accommodate many more players.

The first birthday tournaments in 2005 were very successful and got positive reviews from many attendees, so it was more an obvious transition than a conscious decision that the tournaments become an annual event.
The inaugural 2005 tournaments were held (unless anyone has evidence or recollection to the contrary), on June 25.

Both games were seated with two nine-player tables.
Trivia
The Hiatus
In late April 2007, after nearly twenty years in Tallahassee, Jon and his family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida to follow a new job opportunity. Living out of boxes in a new rental house in Jacksonville, now hours away from all of the regular poker players, was far from ideal for the continuation of the established event.

As such, Jon made the sad decision to forgo the event in 2007, with plans to start up again in 2008.

As mid-2008 approached and again found the household in upheaval. The new job in Jacksonville and solidified from a contract position to a permanent one, and they were packing up the house and preparing to move. There were several inquiries made by players back in Tallahassee as to whether or not the event was happening in 2008, but again it had to be postponed.
During the two off years, Jon had cultivated a fresh batch of regular poker players in the newly-formed Mandarin Poker Tour; the spiritual successor to the group in Tallahassee.

The Reddicks had settled into their new home in Jacksonville, and the time was right to resurrect the birthday games. Jon's main concern, though, was that there really weren't enough MPT players to fill up the three-table roster, and it was uncertain how many KPT players would be willing to make the drive. As it would turn out, those concerns were unfounded.

The mass-email invitation was sent out to all KPT & MPT players on March 29, 2009. Within two days, the roster was one-third full. Two days later, only eight seats were left open. By April 6, 2009; less than ten days after the opening of registration, the rosters for both games were filled (give or take a seat) with an even mix of both MPT locals, and KPT players willing to make the drive.

In the intervening ten weeks, the roster saw a couple of drop-outs and some last-minute fill-ins, but by the date of the event, on June 27, 2009, both games were fully seated with 27 players.
2009 Trivia
* The 3:30 game saw the first ever chop of 1st & 2nd place in a Birthday Invitational. When the game was down to just two remaining players, Mike "Slo-Mo" McCall and Marc "Dot.Net" McNabb agreed to split the top two places' prize money almost immediately. Since there were prizes and places to be awarded, though (a first-place trophy and second-place medal), they agreed to play a single hand open to decide it. Slo-Mo won the hand and claimed the trophy.
* Cory "The Moth" Patrick became the third player make the money in both games in a single year, finishing both sixth and third.
* This event was notable as Jon's fortieth birthday.
* The games were held at the Reddick's home in Jacksonville on Everholly Lane.
* The prizes included payouts for the top seven finishers.
* Marc "Dot.Net" McNabb became the winningest Invitational player, having won a first in 2006, and then chopped for first this year.
* Mike "Slo-Mo" McCall extended his streak and is now the only player to have finished in the money in at least one tournament at each of the first four invitationals.
* Historically, Mega-Bounties were placed on the heads of the previous year's winners, but since it had been three years since the last games, and there was potential that not all previous players would be able to make the trip, the Mega targets have been selected based on other criteria.
** 3:30 Tournament (Descriptions from announcement email)
*** Jon "Mr. Poker" Reddick (Because I'm 40, why else?)
*** Greg "Wide Track" Beck (Because he won the MPT Prize League for the second half of 2008)
** 8:00 Tournament (Descriptions from announcement email)
*** Mike "Hambone" Creamer (Because he's been high-rolling in casinos over the past few months and feels invulnerable!)
*** Grace "Internet" Sumpter (Because she's Grace! Seriously, have you ever been heads-up with Grace? Good luck!)
* Nine hours in, only six seats remained in each game
* 24 hours after the invitation email was sent, only fours seats remained in each game
* Due to an odd confluence of events, two players in 2011 finished twice in the same tournament. One player was a no-show, but his seat was being held until after the first break. In the 3:30 game, Brad "Mayonnaise" Watkins was first out and requested to purchase the empty seat. This was allowed, and he then finished both 27th place and then 16th place. Mike "Hambone" Creamer was first out in the 8:00 game and he purchased the empty seat in that game, allowing him to finish 26th place and then 24th place.
Despite the adjustment, festivities still stretched into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

tocrightThe Jon Reddick Birthday Poker Invitiationals are a series of annual Texas Hold'em poker games held by and for Jon Reddick for his birthday each year.

Trivia
* Jon "Mr. Poker" Reddick (then "Ugly Shirt") was the only player to make the money in both games, finishing third in both.
* The prizes included payouts for the top four finishers.
* The games were held at the Reddick's home in Tallahassee on Lucky Debonair Trail.
Those four bounties were claimed by Greg "Wide Track" Beck, Marc "Dot.Net" McNabb, Mike "Slo-Mo" McCall and "Milk Money" (non-regular friend-of-a-friend).

</gallery>

Good luck!)
* The invitation for registration to the 2011 events was sent out 8am on May 29, 2011
* Two hours into registration, one table was filled in each game
** Named in honor of the first players to exercise the option back in 2011, Hambone and Mayonnaise.
** For each tournament there a single rebuy seat is available for sale.
** The first player busted out has the option of purchasing that seat and re-entering the game.
** If he refuses the Ham Sandwich, then each player to be busted out in succession will be offered the option until it's sold or until the game reaches the second break, at which time the Ham Sandwich goes bad and is no longer available (nobody wants a bad ham sandwich).
* Due to the expansion of the game, a new set of tournament chips were purchased and introduced in 2013 (pictured in gallery at right)
* Charlie "Charlie Checker" Elul firmly established himself as the Mega-Bounty Hunter. He now leads with five Mega-Bounties claimed since the tournaments began.
** His nearest rival is Cory "The Moth" Patrick who has claimed three.
* The medals/ribbons for 2nd & 3rd place were replaced this year with trophies.
* With this year's 3rd place finish, Mike "Slo-Mo" McCall set the record for the most top-three finishes, with five.
** 2005/2nd, 2006/3rd, 2009/1st, 2012/3rd, 2013/3rd
** Second is Scott "Skip You" Cowie with four.
2014 Birthday Invitational Tournaments
The eighth annual event took place on June 21, 2014. With the growth of the games from the previous year, the start time was adjusted back from 3:30pm to 1:30pm for the afternoon, and to 7:00pm from 8:00pm for the evening. Despite the adjustment, festivities still stretched into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

This was also the 10th anniversary of the first birthday tournament, due to the two skipped years in 2007/2008.

* Invitations were sent out April 14, 2014 at 6:48am
** One full table at 7:30am
** By noon, only 9 seats remained
** At 1:15pm (about 6 hours in), there was one remaining table
* Addon tokens were introduced this year.
** Tokens enable dealers to process add-ons right at the table.
** Color-coded popsicle sticks with nicknames written on them were used for the tokens.

* Introduced a new formula for parsing RSVPs which take into account both the order received and number of previous birthday tournament games in which the player has participated.
** The intent was to find an equitable way to invite everyone at once, but ensure long-time supporters of the events aren't immediately shut out of a seat by new players who are quick on the draw.
* Invitations were sent out April 4, 2015 at high noon.
** Filled the first table in eight minutes
** Half full (two tables) in sixty-one minutes (1:01pm)
** Three quarters full in just over four hours (4:04pm)

tocrightThe Jon Reddick Birthday Poker Invitiationals are a series of annual Texas Hold'em poker games held by and for Jon Reddick for his birthday each year.

Trivia
* The prizes included payouts for the top four finishers.
* The games were held at the Reddick's home in Tallahassee on Lucky Debonair Trail.

</gallery>

Good luck!)
* The invitation for registration to the 2011 events was sent out 8am on May 29, 2011
* Nine hours in, only six seats remained in each game
* 24 hours after the invitation email was sent, only fours seats remained in each game
* Due to an odd confluence of events, two players in 2011 finished twice in the same tournament. One player was a no-show, but his seat was being held until after the first break. In the 3:30 game, Brad "Mayonnaise" Watkins was first out and requested to purchase the empty seat. This was allowed, and he then finished both 27th place and then 16th place. Mike "Hambone" Creamer was first out in the 8:00 game and he purchased the empty seat in that game, allowing him to finish 26th place and then 24th place.
** His first trophy was in 2009.
* Introduction of the Ham Sandwich option

** Half full (two tables) in sixty-one minutes (1:01pm)

tocrightThe Jon Reddick Birthday Poker Invitiationals are a series of annual Texas Hold'em poker games held by and for Jon Reddick for his birthday each year.

Trivia
* Jon "Mr. Poker" Reddick (then "Ugly Shirt") was the only player to make the money in both games, finishing third in both.
* The prizes included payouts for the top four finishers.
* The games were held at the Reddick's home in Tallahassee on Lucky Debonair Trail.
* The prizes included payouts for the top six finishers.
* Mega-Bounties of $27 each, per game, were placed on Rob "Mad Dog" Nucatola and Rod "Money" Morris as the champions from the previous year. Those four bounties were claimed by Greg "Wide Track" Beck, Marc "Dot.Net" McNabb, Mike "Slo-Mo" McCall and "Milk Money" (non-regular friend-of-a-friend).

</gallery>

Good luck!)
* Two hours into registration, one table was filled in each game

2015 Birthday Invitational Tournaments
The ninth annual event took place on June 20, 2015.
