The USS Khai Tam is a fictional starship in the Star Trek fandom universe. The vessel (often referred to as "ship" or "starship") was envisioned and designed between the years of 1991 and 1994 by members of the Tallahassee, FL chapter of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association.

History
Commissioned on July 15, 2374, Khai Tam was the first Federation starship of the Qapla'-class. Designed in response to the then newly-discovered Borg threat, the initial order of four Qapla'-class ships, two to the Federation and two to the Klingons, was a hallmark of cooperation between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.

In 2367, Starfleet was developing a new design to fight the Borg. Known as the Relentless Development project, the design was a massive heavy cruiser "armed to the gunnels." At the same time, the Federation was in negotiations with the Kligons to work on a technology-sharing project in ship design as a part of the New Alliance. Learning of the Relentless project, the Klingons declared that the battle cruiser was the only current Starfleet project worthy of Klingon participation. After lengthy talks, the design project was re-started with Klingon paricipation and an amazing new battle cruiser was designed. When the Borg threat dimished, the Federation re-tooled their variants for more of a scientific mission, redsignating them as "Heavy Cruiser - Exploratory." The Klingons, of course, left their variants more militarily inclined.

Though the class-named IKV Qapla, a Klingon variant, was the first of the class to be launched, shake-out problems led to a delay in commissioning. This meant that the Federation-vairiant USS Khai Tam was the first of the class to be commissiioned. The other two initial orders were the IKV Targ and the USS Relentless.

With the success of the prototype units, Starfleet exercised its contract option for 25 more hulls as a follow-on to Khai Tam and Relentless. The capacious shuttle bay facilities of the class proved to lend themselves toward light carrier duty, and several of the class are now deployed by Starfleet in that capacity including the Khai Tam.

Design & Technology
The overall structural design is the most obvious blending of the two technologies at work. What is, essentially, a Federation Galaxy-class saucer design serves as the hull, with enormous wings and nacelles reminiscent of generations of Klingon battle cruisers. A separable component to saucer section was added in the Federation variants to allow an expanded scientific and civilian presence aboard which could be left in a safe zone should the ship be dispatched to a potentially hostile sector.

The real technological revolution of these ships was the way in which the Federation and Klingon technologies were combined. For example, while the ship's matter/antimatter reactor is of Federation design (and unique in its horizontal orientation in the hull), the warp nacelles are very clearly of Klingon design. Combining these two major components of such radically different design was a bit like mating a human and Klingon: it took a little tinkering with the DNA.

The most notable technological strides for the class were made in ordnance, ordnance delivery, and targeting systems. Designed to effectively combat the Borg (the design requirements for the project were that a single Qapla'-class vessel must be able to single-handedly at least delay a Borg Cube for no less than five hours), the ship encompasses a a collection of widely-variable weapons to defeat the Borg strategy of adaptive defense. The ship embarks a next-generation Federation torpedo design as well as Klingon torpedoes and gravitic mines. Variable weapons control for the Federation phasers and the Klingon disruptors also provide superior gunnery.

Unique Elements
Though arguably an entire collection of unique elements, there are a few features of the ship which stand out:

* The Main Shuttlebay, at the bottom of the saucer section, is inverted with respect to the rest of the ship. This makes launching shuttles appear "upside down" when leaving the ship.
* The structural wings incorporate four hardpoints for mounting auxiliary equipment from torpedo launchers to disrupter cannons to Runabout launch cradles. The cant of the wings allows the auxiliary equipment to fit comfortable in the warp envelope without affecting propulsion performance.
* Two remotely piloted vehicles, known as QRPVs, were specifically developed for this class of ships.
* The zoology department is equipped with holosuite enclosures to create an environment for an animal which is indistinguishable from its native one.
* The ship features five dining facilities including a rank-independent five-star restaurant. Reservations are often required.

Technical Manual
In 1993, the members had the basic idea to write a technical manual for the Khai Tam as a way to "sell" the idea to Starfleet to officially sanction this non-canon original design for a Trek-Universe starship. The problem was that no one had the time or resources to work on the project. In April of 1993, Kevin McNulty joined the Khai Tam and offered to help. A stay-at-home-dad at the time, McNulty had the time to work, coupled with writing and computer illustration experience. He, the Khai Tam's Chief Engineer, Colin Toenjes, and other club members began work on the book later that year.

The 92-page USS Khai Tam Technical Orientation Manual was completed in six months. Being well satisfied with their work, the ship thought that perhaps they may be able to sell it at Star Trek Conventions via established dealer channels. In early 1994, Kevin and Colin approached Mike Kott of Intergalactic Trading Company with a rough draft of the book. Not only was Kott interested in selling it, he offered to publish it! This was the crowning achievement of the design team, and a published, bound, and autographed copy was sent off to Starfleet in June of 1994. Shortly thereafter, approval was given for other chapters to select the Qapla'-class starship for their own chapters.

Autographed copies of the book have been given to crew members, Trek stars, and Trek designer Michael Okuda. The book can still be purchased through Interglactic Trading and also through some auction and book sites. Googling the title produces several interesting links even to this day.

The game Khai Tam Clue was based largely on the designs in the book, using floor plans from the book for the game board.

Custom Model
A model of the Khai Tam was created in 1999 by then-member (now Captain) Richard Graham. Using art from the Khai Tam website and parts from several commercially available model sets, he produced a fairly faithful reproduction of what the ship's designers envisioned. The model travelled extensively with the club and was displayed with pride at many events. It was eventually auctioned at a ship fund raiser in 2002 where it was purchased by none other than long-time Khai Tam Captain, Jon Reddick.
Since the early days of the USS Khai Tam, the ship has gotten together once a year to throw a big party. At first, it was to celebrate the season premier of whatever Star Trek show was on the air at the time, but it eventually degenerated into a simple excuse to party all weekend. From 1992 to 2002, KhaiCon dominated the Khai Tam calendar. Even with it's smaller numbers today, Khai Tam still holds its Emergency Holographic KhaiCon, or EHK, in honor of this tradition.

Origins
In September of 1991 the Reddick command staff started the tradition of having a season premiere party. The following year, the party was officially dubbed KhaiCon - a miniature convention complete with games and episode viewings and panels and a lot of fun to be had by all. Each year, KhaiCon evolved, encompassing more and more activities and growing to mammoth proportions...well, as mammoth as it could be and still be called a "miniature" convention.

While the club's parties were legendary, none compare to the KhaiCons held in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Whether it was one member having to pull another's head out of the water because they'd just gotten whacked by a canoe or whether it was the Captain pontificating from atop a chair after he'd had a bit too much Romulan Ale, KhaiCon was always a great deal of fun.

Facilities
When KhaiCon started in 1992, the Khai Tam was still a student organization at Florida State University. This allowed the club access to all kinds of FSU facilities including the "Reservation" - a 73-acre facility, with 10 active acres, located on beautiful Lake Bradford. The "Rez" encompassed several cabins and featured activities like canoeing, kayaking, picnicking, swimming, etc.

Though the facility was enjoyable, it was not handicapped friendly, and kitchen facilities were sparse. Add to the equation the fact that the Khai Tam was increasing its non-student membership to the point where it soon would no longer qualify as a student organization, and the writing was on the wall: a new home for KhaiCon would have to be found.

Fortunately, the ship found the Camp For All Seasons (CFAS), a campground on Lake Talquin owned by Girl Scouts of America. When not in use by scout troops, the camp could be rented to other groups for their non-scouting events. Its large, two-floor lodge had a full professional-style kitchen, showers, and all of the space needed for the event. There was also no shortage of cabins out away from the noise and commotion of the main lodge.

KhaiCon was notorious for being a party where plenty of alcoholic beverages would be consumed, but CFAS had a rule against any such substances on the premises. Knowing that attendees would surely ignore that rule, and not wanting to lose favor with the camp, the ship created it's own official policy to deal with the logistical hiccup, and many fantastic KhaiCons ensued.

Events
Of course, the whole thing started off as a season premiere party, so a group vieiwing of that episode was one of the original activities. The timing of KhaiCon was always tricky as we tried to reserve facilities early enough to be guaranteed a spot come the fall, not always knowing exactly when the season premire would be at the time. Khai Tam Captain Jon Reddick even came through a year or two by sneaking the episode off satellite before it even aired in Tallahassee (thanks to the TV station that employed him at the time). This viewing easily developed into one room at KhaiCon being dedicated all weekend long to genre shows and movies.

Somewhere around KhaiCon IV, Jon had the big idea to have a film contest. Due in no small measure to his being employed at a televsion studio, having a degree in TV & Film, and being almost the only person to ever enter the contest, he won quite a few Turd d'Oro awards over the years.

Each year, members would cook their most bizarre recipes and mix their most potent drinks for the Alien Food & Drink Contest. Everything from Cardassian Vole in Yamok Sauce to the dreaded Borg Lubrication Fluid were sampled by judges year after year.

Once KhaiCon moved to the big-room venue of the Camp for all Seasons, a lip sync competition was added. The members seized on the idea and it became a KhaiCon favorite for many years.

Members would also put on panels, game shows (Khai Tam Jeopardy anyone?), athletic (using the term lightly) events like frisbee golf and vollyball...basically anything anyone wanted to sponsor that anyone else would sign up for. The registration table would be strewn each year with contestant and judge sign-up sheets, and events typically filled up fast.

The apex of activities was hit at KhaiCon XI when Ro Reddick spearheaded the effort to obtain guest star Bill Blair. The self-billed "Alien Actor", Bill has spent much more than his fair share of time in the makeup chair, playing aliens on Start Trek, Babylon 5,and Sliders as well as having more traditional roles in dozens of films, shows and commercials. He was a phenomenal guest and a great sport who hung out with the whole crew all weekend. All in attendance agreed it was fantastic to have a real part of the Trek experience join the ship for the weekend of revelry. The precedent-setting guest star would, however unintentionally, assure that KhaiCon went out with a bang.

The End of an Era
By the time KhaiCon XI was done, there were a lot of crew members who were exhausted. Many of the events were planned and executed every year by the same people. There was a growing sense that someone else needed to step up and do their share. Unfortunately, no one did. Fall 2003 came and went. There would be no more KhaiCon.

Emergency Holographic KhaiCon
The memory of KhaiCon would not go quietly into that long night. It would instead be reborn in a more diminutive size that was more manageable for the ship's smaller crew. It was named after the doctor on Voyager as the Emergency Holographic KhaiCon or EHK.

One of the dedicated few who made KhaiCon happen year after year was Ro Reddick, and though she had announced that she couldn't manage the Herculean effort required by KhaiCon anymore, neither could she let another fall pass without an event. She and Jon decided, in the fall of 2004, to host the first EHK at their home.

As membership in the club curtailed, the "EHK" turned out to be just the ticket, and the EHK has taken place in the Captain's home ever since (2004, '05 at Jon Reddick's and '06 and '07 at Richard Graham's).

It was eventually auctioned at a ship fund raiser in 19XX where it was purchased by none other than long-time Khai Tam Captain, Jon Reddick.
