When writing or editing articles for the REDdimension Wiki, you may be unsure, especially at first, as to what the proper writing style or usage might be. This guide is designed to help you when writing for the Wiki and also to provide consistency across the articles in it.

Some matters of style and usage may be more subjective than others, and some of the style decisions below may be different that ones you may have been taught in school, but they are considered proper usage for this electronic publication.

For consistency’s sake, please follow the guidelines below when preparing or editing an article for the REDdimension Wiki.

Links
Internal Links
Link to an internal article the first time a topic appears on a page. Do not follow with additional links to the same article, (except in the links list at the end of a page). For example:

External Links
Linking to external locations is encouraged, provided the contents of the external site provide significant insight into the topic of the article. Link to an external site the first time a topic appears on a page. Do not follow with additional links to the same site, (except in the links list at the end of a page). For example:
:John once flew on an airplane seated next to Abraham Lincoln.

Usage
Abbreviations
All-Capital Abbreviations
All-capital abbreviations do not take periods except when referring to nations, states, cities or persons. Academic degrees, however, should be abbreviated with periods with no spaces in between.
*Correct
:John Doe, Ph.D. works for NASA
:John Doe, PhD works for N.A.S.A

Lowercase Abbreviations
Abbreviations consisting of lowercase letters usually take periods with no spaces in between.
*Correct
The confirmation of his 3.75 g.p.a. arrived at 10 a.m.
The confirmation of his 3.75 g. p. a. arrived at 10 am

Names of Organizations
Spell out the name of an organization on first reference. Do not follow an organization's name with an abbreviation or acronym in parentheses or set off by dashes. If an abbreviation or acronym would not be clear on second reference without this arrangement, do not use it.
*Correct
:He attneded Katella High School from 1979 to 1980. At KHS he took calculus as a senior.
:He attneded Katella High School (KHS) from 1979 to 1980. At KHS he took calculus as a senior.

Bullet Points
*Capitalize the first word of bullet points (use sentence case). Don’t capitalize every word within a bullet point.
*For short bullet points that are fragments, do not use a period at the end.
*Use a period at the end of bullet points that are complete sentences.
*Periods are the only punctuation mark that should separate bullet points. Do not use commas or semi-colons.
*Make sure your bullet points are parallel in construction. All bullets within a section should be complete sentences, phrases or words that complete the lead-in copy.

*Correct
**He travelled to Hawaii for his honeymoon and,
**Spain - Christmas 2003.

Capitalization
Capitalize the titles of artciles, except when the title is a quotation. When the title is a quotation, capitalize the first word only unless normal punctuation rules for the quoted material would produce additional capuitalized words.
*Correct
:List of Things Jon Wants to Know More About (regular article)
:So there we were in the emergency room... (quotation article)
*Incorrect
:List of things Jon wants to know more about (regular article)
:So There We Were In the Emergency Room... (quotation article)

In section headers, slide headers and bullet points, capitalize only the first word in your header, line, or bullet point unless they include proper names. Don’t capitalize every word in a bullet point.
*Correct
:When to use italics
:When to Use Italics
:...president John Doe
:John Doe, President of the world

Numbers
As a general rule, numbers from one to nine should be written out; numbers 10 and over should be left in numerical form. The same rule applies to ordinal numbers like "first, second...12th, 13th, etc."
*Correct
:Ro picked out number one and number 14.
*Incorrect
:Ro picked out number 1 and number 14.
:Ro picked out number one and number fourteen.

Use numerals to express mathematical, statistical, technical or scientific text and physical quantities such as distances, lengths, areas, volumes, etc.

Spell out a numeral at the beginning of a sentence. If possible, rewrite the sentence so the number isn’t at the beginning. The exception to this rule is when the numeral represents a calendar year.
*Correct
:Last year 212 people attended the convention.
:1999 was a great year.
*Incorrect
:212 people attended last year’s convention.
:Nineteen ninety-nine was a great year.

Dates and years
When writing dates, always use Arabic figures without “st,” “nd,” “rd” or “th.”
*Correct
:The club's first meeting was on March 4, 2006.
*Incorrect
:The club's first meeting was on March 4th, 2006.

Percentages
Write out the word “percent.” Only use the “%” sign within reports, charts and graphs.
*Correct
:Ro scored 98 percent on her entrance exam.
*Incorrect
:Ro scored 98% on her entrance exam.

The word “percent” is always used with a number. The word “percentage” is not.
*Correct
:A large percentage of Wiki members attended the school.
*Incorrect
:A percentage of 72 Wiki members attended the school.

Phone numbers
Use hyphens in phone numbers. It is also acceptable to put the area code in parentheses. Just be consistent within your article. Do not use periods/dots between the different parts of a phone number. Do not put a number “1” at the beginning of a phone number.
*Correct
:952-853-5700
:(952) 853-5700
*Incorrect
:952.853.5700
:1-952-853-5700

Ages
For ages, use numbers; don’t use apostrophes.
*Correct
People in their 20s don’t think they will live to be 85.
*Incorrect
People in their 20’s don’t think they will live to be 85.

Punctuation
Ampersands
Use an ampersand (&) when it is part of a formal company name or part of a product’s formal name. It should not be used in place of the word “and” in a sentence. It is acceptable, used sparingly, as a space-saving device in PowerPoint slides, where brief, simple points are preferable.
*Correct
:AT&T
:Take this style guide home and read it to your family.
*Incorrect
:AT and T
:Take this style guide home & read it to your family.

Apostrophes
Don’t use apostrophes before the letter “s” following years unless it indicates a possessive.
*Correct
:This product was introduced in the 1990s.
*Incorrect
:This product was introduced in the 1990’s.

If just using the last two digits of a year, put an open apostrophe in front of it.
*Correct
:I was a child of the ’70s.
*Incorrect
:I was a child of the 70s.

Colons and semi-colons
A colon means “note what follows.” The most frequent use of a colon is at the end of a sentence to introduce lists, tabulations, texts, etc. Do not put a colon at the end of an incomplete phrase (such as “Product features include:”) despite the fact that you see this done frequently. Rewrite a sentence to avoid this (“Product features include the following:”). Capitalize after a colon only if the start of a complete sentence or a proper noun follows.

*Correct
: Destinations include following: London, New York, Paris, Rome.
*Incorrect
: Destinations include: London, New York, Paris, Rome.

A semi-colon is used between independent clauses in place of “and,” “but,” “or,” “nor,” “for” and “yet.” It is also used between independent clauses joined by such words as “for example,” “for instance,” “nevertheless,” “therefore,” etc.

*Correct
:Representatives from each district attended the meeting; they met in Chicago from March 30 to April 2.
*Incorrect
:Representatives from each district attended the meeting, they met in Chicago from March 30 to April 2.

Commas
Use commas to separate elements in a series, but do not put a comma before the conjunction in a simple series.
*Correct
:This is a cost-effective method of gathering, analyzing and reporting data.
*Incorrect
This is a cost-effective method of gathering, analyzing, and reporting data.

Use a comma before the concluding conjunction in a complex series of phrases. In the examples below, the concluding conjunction is the word “and.”
*Correct
:On the table were bread, butter, salt and pepper, and jam.
*Incorrect
:On the table were bread, butter, salt and pepper and jam.

Periods
Periods (and other punctuation) are used within parentheses only when they belong to the parenthetical matter. Punctuation marks, which belong with the main part of the sentence are placed after a closing parentheses.
*Correct
:Forty-four people attended (not including the crew).
*Incorrect
:Forty-four people attended (not including the crew.)

Quotation marks
Periods and commas are always placed within quotation marks.
*Correct
:“You are an amazing talent,” said Jon's manager. “You deserve a raise.”
*Incorrect
:“You are an amazing talent”, said Jon's manager. “You deserve a raise”.

Question marks and exclamation points are placed inside quotation marks if the quotation is a question or an exclamation; otherwise they are placed outside the closing quotation mark.
*Correct
: Were you surprised when he said, “Stop surfing the Internet”?
*Incorrect
Were you surprised when he said, “Stop surfing the Internet?”

Denise Duggan is writing this article at the request of the wiki owner but can't imagine why anyone would care about this information about her. But because she cannot deny the request of her Captain (don't care what rank he is.... he'll always be Cap'n Jon to me) she's writing this.

tocleft
Childhood
Denise was born in Columbia, SC at Providence Hospital in 1966. When she was five years old her parents got a divorce. For two years she was shuttled between the two of them, attending four schools in her first two years. When she was seven she went to live with her maternal grandparents who became her Mom and Daddy. At that point her childhood became fairly uneventful filled with summer camps and TAG programs until she was 15 years old. That's when her Daddy died suddenly. Unfortunately, she was just coming out of that teenaged funk and realizing that maybe her Daddy was smarter than she thought he was. Talk about missed opportunities! But from that point forward her Mom was mom and dad to her and Mom did a wonderful job - becoming absolutely the wind beneath her wings.

Education
* Florida State University (was halfway to CompSci degree when got a job in programming)
* Florida State University (earned BA in History)
* Tallahassee Community College (earned AA)
* University of South Carolina, 1984 through 1988 (dropped out a time or two)
* Chapin High School, 5th grade through 1984 (no middle school in Chapin at the time)
* Chapin Elementary School through the 5th grade
* Several elementary schools, eventually Seminole Elementary until the 4th grade

Employment
* Trak Engineering, Inc (Embedded Systems Programmer)
* State of Florida - Department of Business and Professional Regulation (Programmer)
* Denise Duggan Development (owner - left for benefits of job with state - with young kids, must have health insurance)
* Computer Aid, Inc. / Professional Analytical Systems & Services (Programmer & Analyst) (PASS was bought by CAI)
* Capital Collateral Representative (Legal Secretary)
* Kelly Services, Inc.
* Numerous fast food and other jobs

Denise Duggan is writing this article at the request of the wiki owner but can't imagine why anyone would care about this information about her. But because she cannot deny the request of her Captain (don't care what rank he is.... he'll always be Cap'n Jon to me) she's writing this.

* Chapin Elementary School through the 5th grade

The Kevin Bacon Game, also known as Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is based on a variation of the concept of the small world phenomenon and states that any actor can be linked, through their film roles, to actor Kevin Bacon.

The game requires a group of players to try to connect any film actor in history to Kevin Bacon as quickly as possible and in as few links as possible. The game was played across various college campuses as early as the early 1990s. Its name is a pun on the stage play Six Degrees of Separation. In 2007, Bacon himself started a charitable organization named SixDegrees.org.

Significance
The Kevin Bacon Game was played prolifically by certain members of the USS Khai Tam during the late ninties, espceically during road trips to various science fiction conventions. Certain members played so ferverently, that some other members would actually demand they stop.

tocrightOn the morning of January 28, 1986, the United State Space Shuttle Challenger was scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center in central Florida.

At 11:38 a.m. EST the ship lifted from its launchpad with seven American astronauts, and 73 seconds later, Challenger was no more.

Below are the memories of REDdimension Wiki Circle members relating where they were when the shuttle exploded in the sky over the Atlantic Ocean just off Florida's east coast and how the national tragedy impacted their lives.
cleanbreak
Kevin McNulty
Kevin was 22 and finishing his last semester at California State University, Fullerton. He was asleep at 8:38 a.m. Pacific Time since he didn't have a class on Tuesday until 10:00. Somewhere around 8:45, his mother rushed in to wake him.

"Kev, the space shuttle exploded..."

Trying to wrap his still-dawning consciousness around the thought, he stumbled into the living room to see the news replaying every camera angle they could, trying to determine what had happened. Though they weren't saying anything official, it was clear to Kevin that no one had survived.

On the way to school, Kevin stopped at a fabric store to buy a few inches of black ribbon to pin to his shirt. It was the one and only time he has ever personally sported a ribbon for a cause.

I was in shock for a couple of days. I didn't know any of the astronauts, but the space program had been a part of me as long as I could remember, and I felt like I lost someone close to me when I heard the news. It would be the same when I heard about Columbia years later.

Jon Reddick
Jon was sixteen years old and attending Haines City High School, just ninety miles from Kennedy Space Center. It wasn't uncommon to watch the conn trail of a morning or afternoon launch in the sky to the northeast during school hours.

By the time of the Challenger, I had watched so many shuttle launches they almost seemed commonplace, so that morning I was at school and on my lunch break, but forgot about the launch and was just killing time hanging out with my friends in the band hall.

Shortly before noon some other kids who had been out on the loading dock of the band hall waiting to watch Challenger go up came running in very agitated yelling, "Hey, the space shuttle just blew up!"

I was sure they were kidding, but after a minute or two was convinced enough to go outside and see for myself. What I saw was striking. For better or for worse, I can say that while I didn't see the actual explosion, I witnessed that now infamous forked smoke pattern in the sky to the east caused by the solid rocket boosters tearing the shuttle apart. Not on TV, not on the news, but in person and with my own eyes.

As chance would have it, one of my very best friends had stayed home sick that day, and had been recording the launch live on television. After school I went to his house and we watched and re-watched the VHS of the explosion as it had happened earlier in the morning.

Colin Toenjes
Colin was eleven years old and was attending Waterloo Junior High School.

I didn't know about it until the afternoon. I heard people talking about the Shuttle throughout the day but didn't find out the details of what happened until after school. My mother worked in the Junior High/High School Library at the time and when I went down to wait for her to finish work for the day, she told me all the details. I saw the explosion for the first time on the news that night.

I have watched a lot of the subsequent shuttle launches on television, and I still shudder and hold my breath when the flight controllers say "Shuttle go at throttle up."

Ro Reddick
I was living in Mobile, Alabama and working for the University of South Alabama Department of Neurosurgery as a medical transcriptionist. I heard about it at work, as all around the building everyone was buzzing. I didn't get to see the footage until I got home where I watched it again and again.
I couldn't believe how much it touched me. I followed the news for days afterwards just trying to understand how and why it happened. Why did it have to happen on this flight? Why with the first civilian? I guess I wasn't aware of how much hope that particular flight gave me -- gave everyone. It was one of those "a giant leap for mankind" kind of things, but the whole world watched that "leap" spiral from the sky that day.

Ceridian Benefit Services or CBS is a business unit of Ceridian Corporation for which Wiki contributor Kevin McNulty has worked since 2006. CBS has principal offices in St. Petersburg, FL (where Kevin works), Salt Lake City, UT, and Birmingham, MI. They are an employee benefit services company that handles COBRA, FSA, and other benefits for literally thousands of companies, including GE and Microsoft.

Kevin's Arrival
Kevin started working for CBS on May 15, 2006. He began as a Benefits Specialist in the Health & Welfare department, administering benefits for Ceridian Corporation (the company uses it's own products). Ceridian Corp. is generally recognized as the most demanding and complex of the H&W clients because:

* The use every product they offer to other customers
* They know how everything is SUPPOSED to work, so they are relentless when something goes wrong

In this environment, Kevin faced many challenges, all to the increased satisfaction of the customer. Kevin was nominated for several awards and recived merit bonuses for his work here.

Becoming a Pilot
When CBS decided to change the way they do business, they needed to test out their new business model on a small group of clients to see how effective it would be. CBS put together a pilot program for this new model and asked Kevin to be part of the team. On May 7, 2007 the pilot began.

The pilot was successful enough for CBS to decide to restructure their entire customer service model, creating dozens of new jobs and eliminating dozens of old ones.

The Great Upheaval
The unpheaval of the change to the new service model meant that everyone in the affected departments would have to re-apply to CBS for one of the new positions. With over 200 peaopl in the affected group, the process dragged on for months.

Finally, on September 28, 2007, Kevin was offered a new position in the KNowldeg Management department. Part trainer, part technical writer, the new position was perfect for Kevin and he for it. He enthusiastically accepted the position which starts on October 15, 2007. Yet another chapter in his Ceridian career is beginning.

*To get money, go to your time, or clock, and set it for Dec. When you walk outside, there will be snow. Find small balls of snow and make a round circle. Find another one and make it half the size of the other one. Warning! Never get snowballs in the Brown ground! It WILL shrink!--Jon 08:36, 21 September 2007 (CDT)
*When you are done with the two balls, roll the smaller one onto the big one. It shall make a snowman.
The snowman will come alive and thank you. Change your time back to the real date and you will get a
rare piece of snowman furniture. You can sell it ( do that! you can pay off your loan easier! ) Or you
Can keep it.
Article Counter
Your number of artciles counter isn't working. I added four tonight and it just kept saying 98. I was trying to get the 100th article. ;-) --Tai
Disambig Template
Do you already have a disambiguation template loaded? If not, might it be time for one? I'm specifically thinking of search terms like "Khai Tam," "Reddick," "McNulty," etc. Thoughts?
